They can hold conversations, teach routines and even express emotions through lights and movements, creating the illusion of companionship.
At the core of interactive companionship are technologies like computer vision, speech recognition and natural language processing. Classification algorithms help the robot distinguish between commands and background noise, while regression models might adjust its tone or speed based on the child's age or mood. Reinforcement learning allows robots to refine their behaviour over time by rewarding positive interactions and discouraging undesirable ones. Clustering can also segment conversational contexts to offer appropriate responses.
These capabilities have promising applications beyond entertainment. Social robots are being used to assist children with autism in practising eye contact and interpreting facial expressions. Robotic pets can provide companionship to children who cannot have live animals due to allergies or housing constraints. In hospitals, robots may distract young patients during procedures and reduce anxiety. As the technology matures, robots could become personalised coaches or tutors that encourage healthy habits and learning.
Yet there are concerns about attachment and dependency. Children may become too emotionally invested in their robotic friends, which cannot reciprocate feelings or provide genuine empathy. If a robot is poorly programmed or biased, it might respond inappropriately or fail to recognise certain users. Additionally, robust security is essential to prevent hacking or misuse of onboard cameras and microphones.
